Automotive Assembly Line-Side Tool Control
Composite scenario. Final assembly cares about changeover loss and right-first-time. Tool control must be line-side with less search time and continuous electronic evidence for lean audits—not after-the-fact paperwork.
Challenge
Mixed-model lines concentrate fixture and torque borrows in changeover windows—wrong station drops or late returns raised first-piece risk on the next shift.
Leads relied on calls or walk-arounds to see who still held open issues; lag made same-shift closure hard.
Solution
Island RFID cribs line-side with access by model, process, or station group. Issue/return events are timestamped; team displays or Andon-side terminals show open returns.
Read-only MES hooks for changeover start/end to correlate tool peaks—no write-back to avoid blurred IT/OT boundaries.
Implementation notes
- Aligned model–process–tool BOM with manufacturing engineering
- Validated line-side networking and enclosure IP ratings
- Reviewed MES field mapping and refresh rate (read-only)
- Joint pilot across one changeover cycle for leads and logistics
